If you suffer from lower back pain, piriformis could be the cause.
This how-to tutorial will show you how you can stretch your piriformis to reduce pain and discomfort in your lower back. These piriformis stretch techniques can help you minimize the pain as you go about your daily activities.
In this video, I’ll be demonstrating on my left leg, stretching out my left piriformis. We treat a lot of patients for lower back pain and piriformis syndrome. There are a few options for stretching the piriformis:
Option 1 – Easy on your piriformis
- Put your left ankle above your right knee
- Push down on your left knee to feel a light stretching
Option 2 – Medium strain on your piriformis
- Put your left ankle above your right knee
- Then you can lift your right leg while pushing down on your left knee
You’ll feel more “pressure” on your piriformis with this stretch.
Option 3 – Stronger strain on your piriformis
- Put your left ankle above your right knee
- Pull your left knee to the opposite (right) shoulder
You should probably build up to this stretch with options 1 and 2, to make it easier on you.
